The significance of the title
Their Eyes Were Watching God is that in this chapter, there is a big storm and nothing can be seen, and although the characters know that the aspect of nature is being controlled all the time by God, they don't know for sure what will happen next, so they look up and try to predict what the next move will be. Like in football, when the cornerback is covering his man and staring down the quarterback trying to predict where the ball will be placed so he can jump in for the interception. When one is in doubt or scared, they look up at someone they don't usually look up at, and as we can see in the book, when it is dark and no no one is in sight, their eyes are put upon God.
